To every young man and woman standing at the threshold of marriage: this is a sincere letter — no heavy preaching, no distant ideals, just practical advice I wish had been said to many before they began.

Reform Yourself Before You Search

Marriage does not reform a person of corrupt habits; it exposes them. Work on your character, controlling your anger, and your responsibility for yourself first. A righteous partner looks for someone like them, so be the person you would wish to marry.

Choose by Faith and Character, Not by Noise

Do not be deceived by appearance, nor follow the fashion of shallow standards. Seek the one who helps you toward good and is patient with you, for this is a lifelong partnership, not a momentary deal. Faith and character remain when all else fades.

Keep It Easy, Do Not Make It Hard

Do not let dowries and lavish costs become a barrier between you and the lawful. “The best marriage is the easiest.” Ease is a Sunnah and a blessing, while excess is a door to debt and delay. Begin with what is affordable, and build gradually.

Learn Life Skills Before the Contract

Love alone does not run a home. Learn dialogue, money management, conflict resolution, and taking responsibility. These are acquired skills, and whoever enters marriage with them spares themselves half the problems.

Involve Your Family and Seek Allah’s Help

Do not take crooked paths. Involve your family and guardian, follow the clear lawful way, and pray istikharah after doing your utmost. Success is from Allah, the means are upon you, and peace lies in joining the two.

A Final Word

Marriage is a blessing and a responsibility, a project for the Hereafter before this world. Enter it with a sincere intention, a humble heart, and a resolve to do good, trusting that whoever is true with Allah, Allah is true with them. May Allah guide you to what He loves and is pleased with.
